Concert violinist turned singer/songwriter reaches across genres and cultures with the release of her debut album 9 Death Haiku, a collection of songs set to the deathbed poetry of Japanese Buddhist monks.

Michi Wiancko – an Orange County raised violinist and singer/songwriter now happily ensconced in Brooklyn – dislikes the term “crossover” but is perhaps the first musician to successfully maintain simultaneous careers in both the high-pressure, high-gloss world of the classical concert musician and the down ‘n’ dirty underground subcultures of the home-recording Indie singer/songwriter.

As “Michi Wiancko” she has recorded a solo album for Naxos (“The World’s Leading Classical Music Label”) and has toured the world as a soloist and chamber musician. She gave her debut recital in Carnegie Hall and has appeared as soloist with orchestras including the Los Angeles and New York Philharmonics, and has several upcoming performances with Yo-Yo Ma and the Mark Morris Dance Group at New York’s Lincoln Center.  As “Kono Michi” (Japanese: “This Path”) she writes and records her own dark and engaging songs at home in her apartment. When her first non-classical album was recently reviewed in the prestigious trade publication, The Strad, this seamless marrying of two quite different genres elicited great praise.

Her songs are released by Shark Batter Records, a teeny D.I.Y. label run from the Scottish Borders town of Galashiels by two brothers, Mike and Roger Small (guitarists with Peel-favourites, Dawn Of The Replicants).  When she takes her Kono Michi material on the road she’s more likely to find herself sleeping on a scrunched up tour t-shirt on somebody’s floor and playing to drunk but enthusiastic fans of PJ Harvey and Sonic Youth in dingy clubs in the North of England.

Kono Michi songs are often accompanied by dark, experimental videos, posted to YouTube.  The promo video for her first single, When I Don’t Come Back, featuring Miss Wiancko sepia-tinted and singing tastefully nude in a bath of milk, raised a few eyebrows in the Classical world. When asked about this though, Michi shrugged it off saying:

“I simply can’t think of a greater luxury in the world than pursuing my own creative impulses. Somehow, ruffling a few feathers makes me feel like I’m actually doing something right.”
